Catalina Flyer
Our Catalina Flyer, is the largest passenger-carrying catamaran on the West Coast, features a richly appointed interior, sweeping sun decks, full-service cocktail lounges, stately viewing windows and ride control. So if you want comfort, service, a friendly crew, or just want to work on your tan, the Catalina Flyer is your choice. The Catalina Flyer is not only the FASTEST boat, but the BEST way to the island.
I took this ride yesterday for the first time ever and must say the Catalina Flyer was very fast and efficient. They are very quick loading everyone in, and it left promptly at 9am. The morning ride was a little rough, going against the wind which in turn made me a little sickly, but not their fault. Leaving the Island was also a breeze, and the ride back was much smoother. They have a bar with refreshments and snacks on the main deck and on the second deck they offer cocktails. There are both inside and outside seats. The only downside is it is a little hard to go to the bathroom when its rocking around (think airplane bathroom in heavy turbulance) so do that beforehand, ladies! My only suggestion would to be to try and find some sort of discount by booking online or with a coupon because it is pretty pricey (about 70 per adult).
Awesome!! My friends and I love The Catalina Flyer. We love to go to Catalina for the day, and the boat ride is a ton of fun. Totally affordable, and much better than any other ride to Catalina. I love the Flyer during the Holiday Boat Parade in Newport Harbor. I got a gift certicate for my sister & her kids to go to Catalina... they also loved it.
Catalina Flyer is perfect for those wanting to get a taste of visiting Catalina Island for the day and live closer to Newport Beach (us Irvinites). The downside is that it is restricted, with one departure time- at 9AM from the Balboa Peninsula nearby the ferris wheel and one arrival time- leaving Avalon at 4:30PM (round trip is approx 1hr 15 min). The cost is a bit pricier than the Catalina Express; however on-line they have a $5 coupon if you order on-line which makes it comparable with their competitor (approx. $63/person). It's a pretty large catamaran, holding 600 peeps so me and the family didn't have any issues with motion sickness though it can get rocky.
Tip #1- Get to the Peninsula between 8 and 8:15AM. I was surprised that there was a huge long line already to get into the boat. Coming back, we got in line around 4PM.
Tip #2- If you like shade and the wind, I recommend you sitting in the second level in the middle seats. The booths are nice but it was nice to get the shade and still be able to enjoy the ocean breeze. If you're lucky to snatch the middle seats with the cushion, you can sleep on your way back with comfort. Inside is a bit stuffy and the 3rd level is a huge college party scene.
Overall, it was a nice ride. We even saw some baby dolphins on our way there. The peeps working the catamaran were cool and friendly. They have a minimal bar area for those wanting drinks and snacks. Great to take the family if they've never been!
